Unveiling of Jane Wenham Memorial

Jane Wenham is the most famous of the “Women of Walkern” with much written about her and her trial for witchcraft in 1712, a trial that changed the law.

On Sunday July 12th, a memorial stone will be unveiled by the Bishop of Hertford inside St Mary’s church in memory of Jane and in recognition of the injustices done to her.

The event will start at 2pm and refreshments will be provided.

My name is Louise Ellis-Aylott and I am ringing tomorrow at the unveiling. Susan Aylott is an ancestor (I do not know the exact relationship) and since my Dad told me the story I have felt sorry of my family’s connection. Therefore I am very pleased to have a small part tomorrow as I feel a terrible wrong is being recognised.

Hello Louise, it was a pleasure to meet you on Sunday. The Aylotts were a very well respected family in Walkern for centuries – their involvement in the Jane Wenham case was a response to the tragic loss of a child, so in many ways understandable. If you’d like, the History Soc can help find your familial link to Susan Aylott nee Harvey?
