We are delighted to announce that April’s Speaker will be Patrick Birdsall.
With his two brothers, he was evacuated to Walkern in World War II. His brother James wrote the book ‘The Boys and the Butterfles’ an autobiographical account of their childhood in the village and surrounding countryside.
Everyone is welcome, entry is free to members. Non-members will be charged £3 at the door. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided.
The event is on Thursday 30th April, starting at 7.30pm in the Walkern Sports and Community Club. Doors will be open from 7.00pm

So very pleased that my brother and I were present for Patrick’s talk. Our mother was Ethel Parker who he talked about and showed photos of the boys with her. She never forgot the boys and would often talk about their adventures. I remember her going to Tim’s funeral and saying she had met Bamber Gasgoiyne, a very famous name on the television. We both went to the churchyard when Tim’s wife’s ashes were interred and met Toby. It was lovely to hear Patrick talking about our very special Mum. I had tiny pictures that Patrick had sent to her as a Christmas present with the little card that accompanied, dated 1947. It was a wonderful evening. Thank you.
We are so pleased that you were able to join us and enjoyed the evening. It is also lovely to hear your memories.
