Our Roman Dove, our Pigeon Hut ‘pigeon’, is coming home!
On Saturday 19th September at 11.00am, Stevenage Museum will be joining us in the Pigeon Hut to repatriate the dove. Everyone is invited to join in the celebrations.
This cast copper alloy mount dove is really important to Walkern History Society. It was found on farm land in Walkern in 2018 and thought to be a mount or finial, maybe from the top of a lid or similar. It has been registered with the British Museum’s Portable Antiquities Scheme and dates from the Roman occupation of Britain (AD43 to AD410). Rather wonderfully, a dove was a long standing symbol of the soul in ancient Rome.
Our Roman dove was inspirational in the naming of Walkern’s heritage centre ‘The Pigeon Hut’, and is the logo.

It deserves to be on display, as it is so unique, but when it was found there was nowhere suitable in Walkern so it was donated to Stevenage Museum. But now we have the ‘Pigeon Hut’ and Stevenage Museum have agreed that it should come home to be displayed in Walkern
