The dream of Walkern History Society, ever since its foundation in 2012, has been to create a heritage centre in the village as our base, and to house, catalogue, digest, display and make available our collection of documents, photos and artefacts. In 2022 we had the opportunity to make that dream a reality, and on 23rd March 2024 the Pigeon Hut was officially opened.

Creating the Pigeon Hut

In 2022 we were invited to take on a derelict, village-owned property that was originally built as a scout hut, but for several years housed Walkern’s pigeon club. It was too good an opportunity to miss, and we set about raising the funds needed to make the building fit for purpose. Over the following two years we raised a considerable amount of goodwill, plus £16k in funds from within the village e.g. through our Adopt-a-Plank scheme. And in January 2024 we were fortunate to receive our 3rd Heritage Fund award toward the “Women of Walkern” project, to kick start our new heritage centre.

This was how the hut looked when we began. Click the photo to see how it was transformed!

The Pigeon Hut collection

The history society collection is formed from items donated to us over the years, events that we’ve held, and items we’ve unearthed during our archaeological test pit digs. Click the photo below to find out more…
