Walkern History Society teamed up with Walkern Players to put on a review show in September 2023.
The first half of the show was dedicated to the WHS Women of Walkern project with acts highlighting the plight of women through the ages. It started with Suffragettes versus Suffragists a comedic musical sketch depicting the struggle of women trying to get the vote and two very different ways of achieving it.

Maggie Hawkins then performed a monologue that she wrote especially about Jane Wenham, a Walkern resident who was convicted and later pardoned of being a witch.
The first act concluded with a short comedy entitled “How the Vote was Won” the simple plot was about all women going on strike at home and the man of the house having to support all the women in his family from wherever they arrived. The men eventually caved in and marched on parliment to secure the vote for women.

We also had a duet singing “Sisters are doing it for themselves”
and a final song “Sister Suffragette” from Mary Popins

The Walkern History Society would like to thank the Heritage Lottery Fund for supporting the event.
