The Canning family ran a general builders business from a yard adjacent to the White Lion on the High Street. It also comprised a sawmill where large tree trunks were sawn with a band saw and put into ‘stick’ in the front yard to dry for several years before being used. As well as working on many individual house in the village Cannings built the first phase of Moors Ley.
