Test pit at Walkern Gallery

Our second test pit at Walkern Gallery, this took place on 10th August 2019

The test pit was dug in front of the gallery next to the farmhouse
Farmhouse built in the late 17th century probably for the Andrews family
Artefacts found in the turf layer before we start digging!
Spit 1 (0-10cm depth)
The High Street is just the other side of the hedge
Spit 2 (10-20cm depth)
Spit 3 (20-30cm depth)
Finds from spit 3
Spit 4 (30-40cm depth)
Finds from spit 4
The top of spit 5, a compacted chalk floor of late Medieval date judging by the finds in spit 4
We dug a sondage (a small trench) to assess what lies beneath the floor, and decided to fill the test pit and investigate further another day…
A well earned bite to eat
